Christmas Eve 2018 message from the Pastor
This is the first sermon in our series: Water Stories: AKA Adventures with Jesus. It begins with joining a revolutionary movement in history, and his Baptism in the Jordan River.
It was a journey that Joseph and Mary did not want to take. All of us encounter journeys in our lives that we wish we did not have to take. Listen to how this journey gives us courage in our journeys.
After Mary agreed to all the angel had said to her, she quickly went to see her cousin Elizabeth. Elizabeth is Mary's encourager. Along the tough and challenging journeys of life we will all likely need encouragement and a mentor. Who is your Elizabeth? Who are you being called to be an Elizabeth to?
We are walking the road to Bethlehem this Advent Season. This week, we accompany Joseph. We see in Joseph an incredible humility and faithfulness in the face of a difficult situation.
Halleluiah sung by Brenna in worship
Sunday was the Annual Christmas Tea hosted by the Presbyterian Women. This recording is the program presented. Many thanks to the Director: Jeanne Walter And thanks to the cast: Marchelle Paul and Tesa Hurlburt & the Little Lambs. And of course to all the women who decorated, baked delicious cookies and treats, and served all so graciously.
During Advent, we are Walking the Road to Bethlehem. The walk begins in Nazareth, a tiny insignificant town in Galilee. This insignificant (not anymore) place is where the Angel of God comes to a peasant girl, Mary to invite her into God's plan... a plan to which Mary humbly submits.... Here am I, the servant of the Lord. Let it be with me according to your word."
Most people believe that love is conditional, that it is based on their behavior. Thus, most people believe that God loves them only when they are good. Jesus told of a God who loves without condition---a God who even loves sinners. False Narrative: God loves us only when we are good Jesus' Narrative: God loves sinners
A dominant narrative, even among Christians is, "I am a sinner." The New Testament narrative is that Christians are in Christ and are new creations in Christ. The resurrected Jesus indwells us and transforms us into new beings, which guides us and empowers us to live a good and beautiful life. To live fully into our relationship with Christ, we lean into metaphors of vine and branches, temples the spirit dwells in, and caterpillars and butterflies. False Narrative: We change by the power of our will. Jesus' Narrative: We change by the power of Jesus.
This is the last in our Sermon Series: Loving the God Jesus Knows False Narrative: Faster is better Jesus' Narrative: Change happens slowly Most of us live under the tyranny of the urgent: a constant sense that we must be doing more in order to be effective. We equate effectiveness and productivity with personal worth and value, which is a great lie. To mature as followers of Christ is like making a pickle; both have to soak a long time, one in brine, the other in the narratives and practices of Jesus.
